Hospital Visit Checklist for English Speakers in Shanghai
A hospital visit can involve several practical steps before you reach the consultation room. If you are more comfortable speaking English, it helps to make one short plan before leaving home. This checklist is about logistics; your hospital and clinical team remain the sources for medical instructions.
1. Confirm exactly where you are going
Check the hospital name, campus, building, department, appointment date, and arrival instructions against your booking confirmation. A familiar hospital name does not tell you which campus to use. If something is unclear, ask the hospital through its official contact channel before travelling.
Keep the confirmed destination in both English and Chinese where available. If you arrange a companion, agree on a specific meeting point and a way to contact each other.
2. Make a list of what to bring
Use the hospital's instructions to check which identity documents, booking confirmations, referral documents, or previous records it requires. Keep originals secure and bring only what is needed. Requirements vary; this article is not a universal document list.
Check any preparation instructions directly with the hospital. Questions about fasting, medication, tests, or symptoms belong to your clinical team; a companion should not decide them.
3. Decide where you need language support
Write down the practical tasks you want help with: finding registration, locating the department, understanding payment-counter steps, or organizing paperwork. Ask in advance whether the hospital provides English support and whether professional medical interpreting is needed. Everyday bilingual assistance and specialist medical interpreting are different services.
4. Keep your questions and next steps together
Make a short list of questions for the clinician and bring a place to record answers. Before leaving, check which documents and receipts you received and which administrative steps remain. If a medical instruction is unclear, ask the clinical team to clarify it rather than guessing.
